If there is anyone who is still bothering to check this blog, please forgive me for my absence. I have thought of you many times and prayed for some of you by name. Many people have let me now through email or comments that the sharing of our struggle has brought them much consolation and […]

As we pass the 1 month mark of Owens birth, death, and burial…questions remain, hurts remain, memories remain, and hopes remain deferred. What are we to make of all this? Pious platitudes seem quite hollow, even if they are constructed upon eternal truth. My heart craves real, honest reality…real hope…real change, I don’t want to […]

I’ll wrap this 5 parter up with this…The Comfort of Friends.
Like I said earlier, I wanted people to see the comfort of God’s hand in the midst of such daunting circumstances and the two ways that are most visible are through Scripture and through Friends. These kinds of circumstances really do clarify and define things, […]

Structure.
It had to be right…the service had to allow us to grieve and to worship, to cry and to hope, to love and to let go. I wanted the service to have a rhythm, to carry us.
In this time our souls were downcast and there was turmoil within us…yet we are to hope in God; […]

Enough time has passed since we held the memorial service for Owen…not enough time to dry up every tear, but enough time to make remembering and now sharing the evening possible.
It was a beautiful night. There were moments when God’s goodness was as thick as the air in August. For those of you who could […]

I’m so sorry to all of you who had your donations to Children of the Nations returned. If you don’t know what I’m talking about, we had a misprint in the obituary that ran in the paper. We asked people to send a donation to COTC c/o Harvest Renewal Church. The problem was we put […]

This Saturday, April 28th, at 7:00 we will be having a memorial service for Owen. It will be held at Hatcher Memorial Baptist Church. They have been so kind to our church over the years in moments when our facilities downtown were not adequate…and in Christ, they are family.
I’ll post more soon. Thank you for […]

I know this is Robert’s posting ground, but he welcomed my intrusion. There is much I’d like to say that feels worthy of sharing, but the most pressing thing I wish to communicate to each of you is our deepest and sincerest gratitude.
We know many of you ached for some way to help alleviate the […]

Friday morning Erin and I learned that our doctors would like for her to deliver Owen on Tuesday, April 24th.
That came as quite a shock! We were uncomfortably prepared for an early May delivery…a good 3-4 weeks away. But the team at MCV has decided that the best medical chance for Owen is a delivery […]

In recent years storms, especially hurricanes, have made headline news. I lived through a hurricane years ago (hurricane Hugo) that destroyed the Carolinas and my hometown of Charlotte. I experienced several massive tropical storms while living in Miami and the Florida Keys. Most recently, we survived Gaston, which left most of Richmond, including our car, […]

I’m so sorry that I haven’t posted anything in a while. There are not too many good reasons, but there are a boatload of excuses. So out of my love for you I will spare you from listening to them.
I’ll be back on schedule this week.
Don’t give up on me yet.

Today we had a follow-up visit with Dr. Seeds and it was determined that Owen’s kidney’s are not working…he is not making urine and therefore he again has no amniotic fluid. The catheter is still in place and the bladder is empty.
What does this mean? If I can be so blunt…it means that God will […]

What a crazy past few days! I apologize for the delay in posts, but I haven’t been near the computer recently.
Thursday, Erin and Owen underwent the catheter procedure again and it was a great success. His bladder responded even better this time!
However, later that afternoon Erin had a couple contractions, so they decided to keep […]

Today it was decided that we need to do the catheter procedure again for Owen. The fluid levels are so low…and it looks like his right kidney is still making urine. So, we need that urine in the womb and out of his bladder.
They are also giving him steroid shots to prepare for the very […]

Today’s visit was like circling the airport for hours. We found out that Owen’s situation has not improved. The amniotic fluid levels remain dangerously low and his bladder is still enlarged. It could mean a number of things, but most likely either a clogged catheter that is letting some urine out or his kidneys […]

We went back to the doctor today for the 2 week check-up and it looks like Owen’s bladder is begining to enlarge again and the amniotic fluid levels have dropped dramatically. There could be a number of possibilities:

the catheter could be clogged or kinked
it could have slid into his bladder completely
the kidney(s) may be producing […]

As I’ve been reviewing, A Father’s Guide to Blessing His Children, I’ve been humbled by my tendency to not follow wise advice. In particular, David Michael suggests that we use one Sciptural blessing for few dys or a week to let it sink into our hearts and get used to the habit of blessing […]

Years ago I was blessed to have lived for a brief time in Minneapolis and attend Bethlehem Baptist Church. The day I left, I stopped by the church bookstore and stocked up on books and tapes for the road. One booklet that I grabbed with the future in mind was, A Fathers Guide to Blessing […]

Today was the one week follow-up for Erin and Owen. Here’s the scoop:
1. The shunt is still in place and working…yahoo
2. The amniotic fluid level is lower than last week…boohoo
3. The right kidney is producing urine…yahoo
4. The left kidney doesn’t seem to be working…boohoo
After one week with the shunt in place, what were the doctor’s […]

The smiles filled the room.
This morning we had an ultrasound and saw that the catheter was still in place and functioning. There was measurable (6cm.) amniotic fluid where there had preveiously been none.
The smile on Dr.Seed’s face was contagious. A victory for Owen is a victory for everyone involved, even the radiologist in the room […]
