I Think I’ve Been Here Before?
Filed Under Life, Owen Update | Leave a Comment
Today it was decided that we need to do the catheter procedure again for Owen. The fluid levels are so low…and it looks like his right kidney is still making urine. So, we need that urine in the womb and out of his bladder.
They are also giving him steroid shots to prepare for the very […]

Here’s the blessing for my boy’s this week:
To this end I bless you in the name of the Lord:
That the Lord may make you worthy of His calling
fulfilling every good resolve and work of faith,
by His power.
And may the name of our Lord Jesus be glorified in you
and you in Him,
according to the grace of […]

Flying In A Holding Pattern
Filed Under Life, Owen Update | 1 Comment
Today’s visit was like circling the airport for hours. We found out that Owen’s situation has not improved. The amniotic fluid levels remain dangerously low and his bladder is still enlarged. It could mean a number of things, but most likely either a clogged catheter that is letting some urine out or his kidneys […]

Something Has Gone Awry…
Filed Under Life, Owen Update | 1 Comment
We went back to the doctor today for the 2 week check-up and it looks like Owen’s bladder is begining to enlarge again and the amniotic fluid levels have dropped dramatically. There could be a number of possibilities:
the catheter could be clogged or kinked
it could have slid into his bladder completely
the kidney(s) may be producing […]

Fasting for the Feast
Filed Under Gospel, Pastoring, Theology | Leave a Comment
George Grant said that, “too much focus on giving things up keeps us from realizing what we’ve been given—the gift of Salvation through Christ’s death on the cross and resurrection.”
I’m practicing giving up something for Lent because I need the practice. My soul needs to know what it’s like to deny myself, to give myself […]

Lent…Not Lint
Filed Under Life, Pastoring, Theology | Leave a Comment
Lint: noun: the annoying, short, and very fine fibers that separate from the cloth during processing or drying.
Lent: noun: the 40 day period proceeding Easter in the Christian Church that is marked by fasting and penitence to prepare hearts for the resurrection celebration.
Well, tomorrow is the official start of Lent and this year we will […]

Tonight I was reminded why I love being a dad, but more specifically the dad of a “dude.
As my son Jude and I went on a walkabout around the hood tonight we decided to venture down the gravel alley behind our house. That would be no big deal if the alley wasn’t made up of […]

Begin With A Blessing

As I’ve been reviewing, A Father’s Guide to Blessing His Children, I’ve been humbled by my tendency to not follow wise advice. In particular, David Michael suggests that we use one Sciptural blessing for few dys or a week to let it sink into our hearts and get used to the habit of blessing […]

Blessing as a Verb
Filed Under Life, Owen Update, Pastoring, Theology | Leave a Comment
Years ago I was blessed to have lived for a brief time in Minneapolis and attend Bethlehem Baptist Church. The day I left, I stopped by the church bookstore and stocked up on books and tapes for the road. One booklet that I grabbed with the future in mind was, A Fathers Guide to Blessing […]

Today was the one week follow-up for Erin and Owen. Here’s the scoop:
1. The shunt is still in place and working…yahoo
2. The amniotic fluid level is lower than last week…boohoo
3. The right kidney is producing urine…yahoo
4. The left kidney doesn’t seem to be working…boohoo
After one week with the shunt in place, what were the doctor’s […]

Stay Off The Porch!

These questions, from Don Whitney of The Center for Biblical Spirituality, were the catalyst to what God has been doing in my life. May they be the same to you as well.
Leave a comment if you use them and let me know what you think.
What’s one thing you could do this year to increase your […]

Confessions of a Recovering Porch Dog pt.2

Just a little more about that fear.
1. Not all fear is bad fear.
That’s not to say that bad fear doesn’t exist. There is a fear that cripples people deep in their soul. There is a fear that keeps people from truly being known and knowing others…even when it comes to their relationship with God. Fear […]

“A dog in the hunt don’t know he’s got fleas but a porch dog can only sit there and scratch. - a good southerner
“Consider your ways! (Haggai 1:5)
I’ve been doing a lot of self-examination for the past few weeks. It’s healthy to spend time examining where you are going and how you plan on getting […]

The Ups and Downs of Victory

The smiles filled the room.
This morning we had an ultrasound and saw that the catheter was still in place and functioning. There was measurable (6cm.) amniotic fluid where there had preveiously been none.
The smile on Dr.Seed’s face was contagious. A victory for Owen is a victory for everyone involved, even the radiologist in the room […]

Sovereign Duck Wrangler?
Filed Under Life, Owen Update | 4 Comments
There are many adjectives and titles used in the Bible to describe God…holy, righteous, king of kings, lord of lords, alpha and omega, Father, and the list goes on. But, after our day in the hospital today it seems like “duck wrangler” may need to be a late edition. Let me explain.
Before the surgery […]

We Have Pee Pee!
Filed Under Life, Owen Update | 1 Comment
Just a quick update to let everyone know that the surgery today was wildly successful. Everything went so well today. The catheter was placed quickly and successfully…they saw an immediate emptying of Owen’s bladder into the womb and an increase in amniotic fluid levels.
That’s some highly anticipated pee pee. I’m not sure that I’ll celebrate […]

Hope Lives Here…?

I haven’t posted any updates on Owen since our trip to the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, the nations #1 children’s hospital. As many of you already know, that trip didn’t go so well. They determined that Owen has both the tetraology of fallot and endocardial cushion heart defects in combination with his bladder outlet obstruction […]

Not Incorrect…Just Incomplete

Much of my time lately has been given to prayer and meditation about prayer. Recently, I’ve often found myself speechless and feeling helpless. In the silence I’ve felt my soul attacked by doubt and feelings of futility.
It’s honest and it’s real.
I’ve heard the voice of my enemy reminding me of reasons that I should feel […]
